We offer two 3-week summer day camps for middle-school students with 120 student contact hours. One is an Aviation Camp while the other is a Boating Camp. The middle school camps consist of 120 student contact hours/three-week. In the aviation camp, the students experience three-dimensional thinking while learning how to analyze data and apply critical thinking skills to appropriately manipulate airplane controls. Our Aviation Camp is approved by the NC Department of Transportation as an Aviation Career Educational Program or ACE camp. The exposure in the boating and aviation camp represents the ultimate hands-on application of science and mathematics principles that have been taught in the classroom. The camps will consist of the following:

  • the history of aviation
  • aerodynamics relative to unpowered and powered flight
  • hands-on class projects to test aerodynamic efficiency in a wind tunnel
  • field trips to military bases to see some of the most advanced aircraft in the world
  • understanding aviation charts
  • weather
  • flight planning
  • flying a simulator and real airplane
  • propulsion systems
  • training and flight time in a full motion simulator
  • flight time in an actual airplane with an FAA certified flight instruction

  • boating and marine ecology
  • a US Coast Guard youth boating course
  • a science day at the NC Estuarium
  • kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving
  • operate a sailboat on the Pamlico River
  • field trips to military bases to see a variety of ships and watercraft
  • Buoyancy and fluids
  • Propulsion systems
  • Impact of weather
  • Navigation and charts

During all our summer camps, we conduct a comprehensive and interactive segment in which the students engage in discussions about a variety of life-skills topics that cover the following points:
  • Self-confidence
  • Responsibility
  • Teamwork
  • Goal Setting
  • Self-respect
  • Peer pressure
  • Good decision making
  • Diversity

Redbird Jay Velocity Basic Aviation Training Device

The desktop Redbird Jay Velocity Flight Training Device (FTD) is the latest generation of an introductory flight training device. This a cost-effective and very effective entry-level teaching tool that can accurately replicate the airplane movement relative to control inputs made by the student to maximize student learning.

Redbird FMX Full Motion Simulator (FMX)

The FMX is “state-of-the-art” FAA-approved device that can be used to conduct all phases of flight training. It accurately replicates the 3 axis motions of flight; yaw, pitch, and roll. Small electric motors, computer hardware/software and eight screens combine to create 180 degrees of realistic outside visual references including airports and terrain. This simulator is an example of a sophisticated robotic device. Exposing the students to the aerodynamics of flight, thinking in a 3-D environment, and the function of the flight controls through the FMX has proven to be extremely successful and a phenomenal teaching tool.
